March 20

JOURNAL TOPIC:
Described a powerful lesson you learned through playing a game.

AGENDA:
1. Journal
2. Essay exam

HW:
Prepare for tomorrow's Socratic seminar by writing notes on the following (you can post these as comments to this post, or to your blog, but you will be graded on the quantity/quality of your participation tomorrow, so feel free to bring them with you in either printed/written form or on a device):

1. Watching this video

2. Reading this article

Serious_Need_for_Play_SciAmer_article__1_ -

3. Comparing what a reader can "play with" and/or learn by comparing the Donne sonnet, Shakespeare's writing, and this ee cummings poem:

if you like my poems let them
walk in the evening,a little behind you

then people will say
"Along this road i saw a princess pass
on her way to meet her lover(it was
toward nightfall)with tall and ignorant servants."

4. and (lastly), connecting the dots by reading the following Zen koan and describing how playing with a question can create a learning experience:

Bells and Robes

Zen Master Unmon said: "The world is vast and wide. Why do you put on your robes at the sound of a bell?"

  1. How do u percieve the world?
    -something u can identify with
-what global cause did her son die from
    -asking the “why” question
-how to sit together and discuss
-are brands more powerful than governments?
-Q#6 if life developed in Africa, then why is it so disenfranchised? Its about power relations.
-purpose of this 100 question thing is to get the globe united in a huge forum to solve our worlds issues
    - THE SERIOUS NEED FOR PLAY
    • Social and emotional development
    • Free play is the best kind of play
    • Its essential for the brain development
    • Couldn’t cope with stress or deal with anxiety if they did not play. Many end up being serial killers
    • Between 1981 and 1997 the level of free time went down because parents were worrying about college
    • “play” can help adults tooo
    • games have rules and play doesn’t
    • play is repetitive
    • developes ssocial skillsssss
    • “vanilla or chocolate” vs “vanilla icecream or chocolate icecream”?
    • studies show that isolated rats are (obviously) less social
    • relieves anxiety and stress
    • some kids are anxious to leave and go to pre school, others aren’t. I was. These kids anxiety level lowered when they were told to sit and listen to a story.
    • Social buffering
    • Blocks in low income families. After 6 months, the block kids had significantly higher language skills
. “Play has to be reframed and seen not as an opposite to work but rather as a complement,” he says. “Curiosity, imagination and creativity are like muscles: if you don’t use them, you lose them.”

  2. this is beautiful, a word used to describe those we are affectionate for can describe this here. the video was wonderful this is a tool. the very idea of recording all of these people answering some of the most powerful questions not only to be heard there at that table but also around the world by those people that asked them to begin with is amazing. with questions so deep and with the knowledge of such intelligent people there is no other description for the beauty of the beast.
