December 6

JOURNAL TOPIC: [today's tunes: "Final Hour" by Lauryn Hill; "Time Is the Final Currency" by CPR]

Welcome to the beginning of the end of the beginning. Around this time of year the word "Finals" gives people the idea that something is ending. As you already know, that isn't true for us. We're just getting started. As you reflect on your education to date, what would you like to accomplish in your last semester of high school?

AGENDA:
1. Journal
2. Mindmap feedback
3. Vocabulary Final

HW:
1. Study for finals (lit terms tomorrow)
2. Pump your fist in the air with pride (if you did yesterday's HW completely/correctly) or hang your head in shame (if you didn't). To those of you in the latter category, pick your head up and finish what you should've started. This isn't about credit; it's about whether you're in or you're out. I will announce the platform and next steps tomorrow (Wed. 12.7) in class.
3. Find a person who has contributed to your success in this course and thank him/her. I just started by thanking Kaley.

  4. I would personally like to thank you Dr.Preston.

O Captain My Captain! Our fearful trip is done, the ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won, the port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting.

We have followed you out of the cave and I suppose we will journey back to the depths of the cavern next year to free the others next semester when we broadcast our blogs to all who will listen.

  6. People exulting in a high school English class-- whooda thunkit. Thanks Trenton, may all your spelunking be so inspiring.

I was glad to see and hear so many partner stories this semester. Think we should have some sort of end-of-semester MVP ("Most Valuable Partner") nomination/award process? Thoughts?

  8. Thank you Jessica Parra for giving me that extra shove in the right direction whenever I needed it, which has been a LOT. And for always making me feel better when I felt like a Negative Nancy :)

Thank you Betzy Bras for being a great partner and for always encouraging me when I need it.

Thank you Dr. Preston for helping us pursue what we believe in and raising our standard bar to the point where we challenge ourselves and become not only better students but better people. Thank you for not giving up on us like others may have done in some point of our lives.

Thank you Tatiana Alvarez for your inspirational letters that get me through the day and for all the advice you have given me. :)

Thank you Yun Joo Lee for being my study buddy during zero period and for your words of kindness that I never expect which only make them that much more special.

Thank you Marisol Zepeda for being the best friend anyone can ever ask for and for believing in me when I didn't.

  9. I would like to thank everyone for going on this journey of self-discovery and class awareness, it has been a wonderful ride and it's not even close to finished yet. I can't wait to see what crazy things DP makes us do next semester.

    Ha. ha. ha. HAMLET.

PS. Nicole Montoya is my rock and the only reason why I get half my homework done. Because she's always there in my car telling me to soldier on. Also, we love to discuss this class together and that's always a blast.

    Savanah OUT.

  11. I would like to say this. Tardiness is not something you can do on your own. Many, many people contributed to my tardiness. I would like to thank: my parents, for never giving me a ride to school; the LA city bus driver, who took a chance on an unknown kid; and, last but not least, the wonderful crew from McDonalds, who spend hours making those egg McMuffins without which I might never be tardy.

  12. I would have to thank Nicole Anderson and Kayla McCallie, my partners and my good friends.

Kayla, you have helped me define and refine the deeper thoughts and theories I have created as a by product of taking this class as well as calling me up whenever I missed a day of school. I thank you for catching me up and willing to answer an obscure question or two that about the class that seems almost pointless or irrelevant.

To Nicole I thank you for giving me a fresh look at problems and by reminding me that the answer is not always ten thousand leagues under the sea. My philosophy has always been "why do it the easy way when you could do it the hard way" and you show me more often not that the hard way will drive me insane and it is ok to take the easy way as long as its the right way. I also thank you for giving me tips on blog assignments at 8 PM when I have dropped dead of exhaustion from sports in front of my computer.

I honestly could not have better partners. Thank you both for all that you have done.
