JOURNAL TOPIC: [today's tunes: "Excitable Boy" by Warren Zevon; "What's He Building in There" by Tom Waits; "Monster Mash" by Bobby 'Boris' Pickett and the Crypt-Kickers]

As you listen to today's tunes reflect on how authors use irony, allusion, symbolism, and even humor to help an audience suspend disbelief long enough to get scared out of our minds! How does Shakespeare use these tools in Hamlet, and to what effect?

AGENDA:
1. Journal
2. Discuss essay/ hero prompt
3. Vocab

HW:
1. Find your next literature analysis book (if you haven't already) and bring it with you to class tomorrow (Tuesday 11/1).
2. Define the term "meme" and explain why the concept is important in online communication. Comment to this post with your answer.

  1. The term Internet meme is used to describe a concept that spreads via the Internet. The term is a reference to the concept of memes, although the latter concept refers to a much broader category of cultural information.
This is important because it provides us a reference to something we have viewed on the Internet before we read it.

  2. A meme is a reoccurring joke, phrase, trend, or idea that spreads through culture (in our case, the Internet). My saying "lulz" was a playoff of "lol" or "laugh out loud" being said as "lohl" (which is how I always say it in my head anyways).
Memes can be a form of unification, an inside joke for anyone who wants to know. They create common understanding. And sometimes confusion.

  4. Meme: A unit of cultural information, such as a cultural practice or idea, that is transmitted verbally or by repeated action from one mind to another.

My example of a Meme: When I was younger, I would join in on the little entertaining hand games that kids loved playing. One of them went like this: “This is Buggie. Buggie says hi. This is Buggie when a car comes by.” And of course, there were clever hand gestures that went along with it. Well, the other day, my 8-year old sister came home and was excited to show me that exact hand game which she had learned that day. However, the way she learned it went like this: “This is Fred. Fred says hi.” And that was it. I was disappointed with those changes so, I showed her the way I had learned it. It just goes to show how things change when they are passed down through time.

  6. A meme is an idea that can replicate and evolve, like a gene. It’s also a unit of cultural information that can also be transformed, etc. this term and concept was created by Richard Dawkins, the author of The Selfish Gene and he described the meme as “a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of imitation,”
It’s interesting how Dr. Preston asked us to define the term “meme”. I heard of this word through artists and through titles of art. I’ve been curious about it and now I know… Anyway, Internet Meme is used to describe a subject or a concept that spreads through the Internet. It’s an idea that’s used through World Wide Web and it can include things like picture, videos, websites and many more. This concept is important to online communication because it shows cultural information that many other World Wide Web users might be interested in. Memes can diffuse into various culture including literature and art. Correct me if I’m wrong but there seems to be a difference between Internet meme and “art meme”. I find the “art meme” to be a compilation of various artworks put together in one picture or one piece of artwork. This is where I originally stumbled upon memes. I’m not positive if that’s what it really means but according to another source, internet memes are just like blogs. When one person posts something interesting, it becomes viral, and then becomes a meme.

  7. A meme is a behavior, style, or idea that spreads from one person to another within a culture.

This is important in online communication because memes help create a sense of community. By having everyone with knowledge of the particular meme within a given community, it gives them a sense of togetherness because they might be the only ones who know what they are talking about when they use the meme, kind of like an inside joke of sorts.

This concept can refer to the widely used phrases in online communication. For example, the terms "lol," "omw," "ttyl," etc. are abbreviations that have been passed from person to person through texting, IMing, emailing, and other forms of communication. If my parents saw these terms, they would have no clue what they mean; this is just part of newer generations.

  10. A meme is an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture.

Most of online culture is memes. Some things that come to mind are planking, owling, coning, and leisure diving. They all started with one person posting a picture of themselves online, and since has grown into a type of competition of who can do these things best or funniest. MySpace used to be the big thing, and everyone wanted to code their profile and post pictures. Then facebook came along and most left MySpace to join facebook. Now there are tons of other social networking sights, all with something a little different to set them apart. On Youtube, people have posted videos of themselves singing, vlogging, or trying to be entertaining. Some of these people have been signed, guest starred on television shows, or appeared in commercials because everyone was interested in what they did. Now everyone wants to be famous and is trying to put new videos up. Everything on the internet spreads like wild fire.

  11. Meme: It's like an inside joke, but of people belonging to a certain area of the internet (yes, area, they have those online.) They can be seen as mean, offensive, hilarious, etc. It really depends on the person reading it (you touched upon this a few journals ago when you said that when something is said among people, it can be looked at very differently by a lot of different types of people.) I would never show anyone the stupid stuff, or memes if you will, that I spend my time laughing at other than the people who I know share the same "area" of the internet as I do. It wouldn't make sense. At all. They're important online because they link people with one another, it keeps insiders in and outsiders at a safe distance.

  12. A meme is an idea, behavior or style that has spread from person to person throughout culture. It can be carried on through gestures, hand motions, writing, or other various forms.

Memes are important for the internet because it can bring together a group of random people that all have a meme in common. Whether it be owling or doing the Dougie, it's passed on to different people in different ways. They can be compared to trends that occur online and a way to spread a meme would be on social networks or by email. As it spreads, it brings a sense of community among those who know what it is. Therefore, memes can be used to unite web users.

  13. Meme: An image, video, etc. that is passed electronically from one Internet user to another.

“What the hell are you talking about?”
    “It’s a meme, you wouldn’t understand.”

I don’t know many memes because I don’t dwell on forums. However, my point is that memes have become, in a sense, part of language, like words. My friends make jokes all the time in reference to these memes, or they invoke a meme in certain situations. And in order to understand what the hell they (my friends) mean, I have to know the meme. Sort of like acronyms. If you read a conversation full of them, you have no idea what it is meant if you don’t know them. However, once someone tells you that F.T.W. means For The Win and R.O.F.L. means rolling on the floor laughing, it is all understood. I considered memes to be like words, indeed they are like such although it may be more accurate to say that they are more of a symbol. If someone says Troll Face, not only is there an image, there is also a mountain of cartoons, situations, jokes, etc. that go along with it. Thus, a meme bundles up all sorts of ideas into one word or phrase or image, resulting in mass communication through just one item. I think this is why it is important. Also, to its importance, memes are created from the internet community itself, demonstrating the communicative powers of the web in itself.

  15. The term meme is an idea, pieces of culture, that self-replicate and is transferred from a person or group to another person or group. Richard Dawkins invented the term "meme" which stands for something that is imitated. The common usage of the term is through wide number of words, images, phrases, or videos that relatively spreads quickly without much effort. Terms such as "lol", "g2g", "ttyl", "OMG" are all abbreviations for phrases such as laughing out loud, got to go, talk to you later, and oh my God. As we can see, many people begin to use this concept which eventually became almost universal...that is to the teens. As more people begin to incorporate and permeate such ideas, then there would be a world wide communication where everyone knows what he/she is talking about.

For example, the iPad commercial that we saw in class today, the toddler already knew how to use an iPad, and knew more about it that she did a magazine. This is the same experience as I have with my little cousins, because they know how to use an iPad more than I do. This is integrating into our generation’s culture, it is a meme. 37. First coined by the evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in his book, The Selfish Gene, the word meme has evolved into from something general and associated with everything bit of human culture, to specifically, the internet culture. The original meaning that Dawkins prescribed to was the idea that anything manufactured by humans, including art, religion, books, songs, tools, vehicles, etc., and spreads quickly to from human to human is a meme. Ask any teenager now, and they will tell you about the "lolcat" they saw on the internet, rather than a famous painting they viewed while on an excursion to a museum. However memes are a necessity, and by memes, I mean the internet culture. When a tool is first discovered, it spreads quickly from one group of people to the next because of it's usefulness and importance. The same goes for art. If you are trying to start an organization or trying to build support for something, your best option is to take it viral and show it to as many people as possible. It will in turn spread to even more people and become more popular. This is the very idea of memes, and it's this idea that makes memes important for spreading important or serious information, not just "lolcatz."

Now the communication on social networks (ex. facebook) is to the point where using abbreviations or any type of slang is common and everyone understands.

For example: planking, "Swag", "Lol" etc.

It's what turns concepts and ideas viral such as Jerking or Planking with the help from twitter, facebook, and youtube there is nothing that goes unnoticed, and wont take long to get around the world. 77. Posting on behalf of Kaley Jorgensen:
Memes are ideas of behaviors that spread to other cultures. This relates to the online world because it shows how fast information can be spread. Once something is available online it's safe to assume it will be there forever. Also, another point to add is how fast the world of the Internet changes. Back in the days of no Internet and limited technology, memes could be good things. Ideas and other styles would grow and spread to other cultures. Today, it might not always be a good advantage. That is why it's so important to be aware of how the Internet can have a (bad) effect on your daily lives.
