November 1

[HW UPDATE: I originally published today's post with HW assignment on RSS-- by the time I caught the mistake some of our sharper colleagues had already done the work (kudos!). They won't have HW the day I assign it. But it's not due tomorrow.]

JOURNAL TOPIC: [today's tunes: "Connected" by Stereo MCs; "The Mothership Connection" by George Clinton]

We are "connected" to each other in all sorts of ways: biologically, geographically, emotionally-- and, increasingly, technologically. Describe the networks you belong to both (both online and offline) and explain how technology strengthens or weakens your ties to others in the network.

AGENDA:
1. Journal
2. Lecture 2.0 (if you missed it you can see the prezi here; we got as far as the "automate your search" slide)

HW:
1. Read Roy Christopher's post on Digital Natives and prepare three questions or comments for tomorrow's talk.
2. Go to netvibes.com and get started.
2. Think about the challenges you faced in writing the Hamlet essay and prepare three questions for this week's writer's conference.

  1. "RSS (rich site summary) is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Many news related sites, weblogs, and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it."

  2. "RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication". It is a way to easily distribute a list of headlines, update notices, and sometimes content to a wide number of people. It is used by computer programs that organize those headlines and notices for easy reading."

    By reading the article about RSS, I found out that RSS is a better way to be notified of new and changed content than via email notifications. Also, people in the past had to "bookmark" the websites, but the RSS sends relevant and up to date informations/notifications for us to read in our spare time. I can use the RSS by subscribing and keeping track of the websites I'm interested in and give it a try.

  3. To get started on the netvibes link, what topic are we supposed to follow? Or am I totally lost in how to set it up?

  5. So today in 4th period we briefly talked about proctastination and it reminded me of this video. It gives an overview about why we procrastinate and how you can help prevent it. It's really cool. Check it out :)

  9. Ok, I am seeing posts about RSS and about the netvibes thing. My questions are: what is the RSS thing about and what do you have to do for that? 2 being, what are we supposed to do with netvibes? I see a page and stuff for buying things... any help would be greatly appreciated because as of now, I have no clue what to do.

  10. I agree with Jon. I clicked on the netvibes link but am lost on what I need to do. Also, what is this RSS I am reading on others' comments? This is the first I am hearing of this

  11. So, after we 'get started' on netvibes...what exactly are we supposed to do? Was there in class instruction?

  12. He changed the RSS assignment, so you don't have to do that for tomorrow. Netvibes creates a personal dashboard where you can link a bunch of different types of apps that you want to use on the internet. I think we're supposed to create an account so we can start creating a dash.

  13. I'm a little confused on how to even get started on the Netvibes thing. I am lost on what we are suppose to be doing. Create a new dashboard?

  14. Hi all:
    1)Only use the free/basic registration for netvibes, nothing we do this year will cost you a dime;
    2)RSS assignment was up earlier by mistake (way to catch that worm, early birds!) but will actually be tomorrow's HW;
    3)Netvibes enables you to automate feeds from sources you trust/prefer-- this is very different than algorithms filtering your research results without your knowledge/approval. Will discuss in more detail tomorrow.
    4)"Get started" means exactly that. By pointing you to the green button I expected you to mess around a bit and see what the site can do. Tomorrow in class I will give you a couple of examples and suggestions for creating a dashboard, and by early next week yours will be up and running (of course, you may tweak it as time goes on, but at least you'll have one that works)
